Navigation & Electronics
Whistler runs a full B&G navigation suite on NMEA 2000, with an EM-Trak AIS transponder added post-delivery.
Chartplotter — B&G Zeus3S
Two Zeus3S plotters — one at each helm station. Both display the same network data (charts, AIS, instruments, autopilot).
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Charts | C-MAP or Navionics (check what's loaded) |
| AIS overlay | All AIS targets shown with CPA/TCPA |
| Depth overlay | Live depth from AirMar transducer |
| Autopilot control | Can engage/steer autopilot from Zeus3S |
| Instrument data | Speed, wind, depth, log all displayed |
Key Zeus3S tips:
- Press the NAV button to go to the chart page
- Tap any AIS target to see vessel name, speed, bearing, CPA
- The MOB (man overboard) button is on the main toolbar — press it the moment someone goes over the side, it logs the position
- Connect via WiFi to the B&G GoFree app for phone/tablet chart viewing
Instruments — B&G Triton2
Triton2 displays are mounted at each helm and show:
- Boat speed (log)
- Depth (with shallow alarm — set to 4 m minimum)
- Wind speed and angle (true and apparent)
- SOG / COG (GPS)
Set the depth alarm every time you anchor — use charted depth + 0.5 m buffer.
Autopilot — B&G NAC-2/3
Always keep a watch
The autopilot steers the boat but does not keep a lookout. Always have a crew member on watch when it is engaged.
Engaging:
- Steer onto desired heading
- Press AUTO on the Triton2 Pilot Controller (the dedicated keypad at the helm), or engage from the Zeus3S
- Confirm the heading displayed matches your intended course
Adjusting heading: Use the +1/+10 and -1/-10 buttons on the pilot controller to nudge course.
Disengaging: Press STANDBY on the pilot controller, or simply take the wheel — the autopilot will disengage when it detects helm input.
Wind mode: The autopilot can follow a constant wind angle rather than a fixed heading — useful when the wind direction shifts. Select from the pilot controller menu.
AIS Transponder — EM-Trak B951
Class B transmitting AIS — other vessels see Whistler on their plotters.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| MMSI | (check the unit — set during installation) |
| Call sign | Whistler |
| Transmit power | 2W (Class B) |
| Update interval | Every 30 sec at >14 kn, 3 min at rest |
AIS targets appear on the Zeus3S chart overlay. Tap any target for CPA (closest point of approach) and TCPA (time to CPA). If TCPA < 20 min and CPA < 0.5 nm, treat as a potential collision situation and act.
VHF Radio — B&G V60
| Channel 16 | Always monitoring at sea — distress, safety, initial contact |
| Trogir port | Ch 17 |
| DSC | Built-in — MMSI programmed. Press red DSC distress button for automated Mayday |
| GPS position | Automatically included in DSC distress calls |
The V60 has a handheld remote mic (wired) at each helm — you do not need to go below to use the radio.
Range: ~25–30 nm to another vessel, further to a coastal station on high ground.
B&G IP Cameras
Cameras mounted at the masthead (and/or below deck) feed live video to the Zeus3S plotter.
Access via Zeus3S menu or the iVMS350 app on a tablet/phone connected to the boat's WiFi network.
IP addresses for the cameras are noted in the Manuals section.
GPS / Antenna — B&G ZG100
Dedicated GPS antenna feeding position to the NMEA 2000 network. All instruments and the chartplotter receive GPS from this unit. No action required — it is always on when the nav system is powered.
Network & WiFi
VONETS WiFi bridge relays the boat's network to marina WiFi or a cellular source. The Teltonika RUTM11 cellular router provides 4G internet access at sea — SIM card required.
Connect devices to the boat's WiFi SSID (ask the skipper for the password).
Orca Navigation App
Orca is installed on a dedicated device. It provides routing, waypoint management, and integrates with the B&G network. Useful for passage planning when the Zeus3S is in use for navigation.
